Charles David "Bobby" Grant, 87, of North Charleston, South Carolina, passed peacefully into Eternal Life on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at his home. Born and raised in the Liberty Hill Community, he was the son of the late Reverend Charles Augustus Grant, Jr., and Albertha Telfare Grant, and the great-grandson of Ishmael Grant, one of the founders of Liberty Hill.
A devoted Christian and longtime member of Shiloh A.M.E. Church, Bobby lived by the motto “live, laugh, and love.” His favorite scripture, Proverbs 3:5, guided his deep faith that God is always in charge. Those who knew him remembered his infectious smile and his generosity, kindness, and service, qualities confirmed by many who shared their personal testimonies.
Bobby graduated from Bonds Wilson High School in 1956 and from Allen University in 1960 with a degree in Elementary Education. He later pursued graduate studies at South Carolina State University. He taught in the Andrews, Summerville, and Hollywood school districts before beginning a long career with South Carolina Electric & Gas Company, where he became one of the first African American bus drivers and eventually advanced to a supervisory role after 18 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his sisters Rachel Grant Mitchell and Mary Lou Grant Murrell. Bobby is survived by his beloved wife, Gwendolyn Holt Grant; his five children, Charles Daryll Grant, Cary Randolph (Danette) Grant, Valerie Stacey Grant, Craig (Erica) Jackson, and Veronica Pendergrast Singleton; his sisters Marva Dell Grant Ivey, Dr. Lucinda Grant Griffin, Etta Diann Grant Ferguson, and Margaret Grant Carter; thirteen grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends who will cherish his memory.
