He received an AA Degree from Lon Morris Junior College in Jacksonville, Texas, A Bachelor of Science Degree from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, and a Master of Theology Degree from Perkins School of Theology-Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. He had graduate-level training in Marriage and Family Counseling and Thanatology.Chaplain Jones was a member of the Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. He entered the Air Force Chaplain Corps in 1969, after serving for six years as a local pastor. He served in the Air Force Chaplain Corps at wing level and in four major command offices, serving as Command Chaplain United States Air Force Europe and Air Force Combat Command. He was the Deputy Chief of the Chaplains, and as a member of the Secretary of Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff on religion, ethical and quality of life issues. He retired in 1999.After retiring, he volunteered as part-time associate pastor at Montgomery United Methodist Church in Montgomery, Texas, where he lived for eighteen years following retirement.He and his wife, Annette, were married in 1957. They had two children, Melissa and Jennifer. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Melissa Jones Adams, who died of cancer in 1988. He is survived by his wife, Annette, his daughter, Jennifer Jones of Montgomery, Texas, and his grandson, Hunter Jones, of Houston, Texas.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
