Mellencamp, "Cece," was born on April 9, 1943, in Coloma, Michigan, to the late Kenneth Coates Sr. and Mildred Albert Coates. She passed away peacefully at home on March 13, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.In 1958 she married Jerry Ray "Jay" Mellencamp. They were married 28 years. She loved nothing more than her two "babies ", daughters Kim and Jeri.Cecilia loved all things outdoors and found joy in the beauty of nature. She especially had a deep love and appreciation of trees. She enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, and just spending time outside. In her later years, she enjoyed working puzzles. She treasured time spent with her family. Her love for her family was deep, steady, and ever-present.She was of Christian faith, and that faith carried her with incredible strength and resilience throughout her life.She worked at Graessle-Mercer Co. for years and ultimately retired from the US Postal Service.She is survived by her daughters, Kimberly Jo (Robin) Freeman and Jeri Ann (Brian) Burbrink.She was "Mamo" to her grandchildren, Jamie Freeman (Matt Weimer), Carrie (BJ) Arbuckle, Makenzie (Dustin) O'Neal, Ashley (Symon) MacTavish, and her great-grandchildren Jerrett (Alexa) Stark, Kaitlyn Calandro, Zander and Zoey O'Neal, and Monroe and Jack MacTavish.In addition, she was blessed with three great-great-grandsons, Jackson and Jameson Stark and Krue Phillips.Also surviving are her sister-in-law Barbara Coates, and brothers-in-law, Richard Mellencamp and Ronald Clark, and several nieces and nephews.Cecilia was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Kenneth Coates Jr. and Floyd Coates, her sisters Esther Bryan, Judith Lewis, and Nancy Yheulon, and her longtime companion, George DeWall.Friends may gather with her family from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm Tuesday March 24, 2026 at Voss and Sons, followed by a brief life celebration.She wanted to leave her family and friends with one final message:"Shalom" - peace be with you.Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Arbor Day Foundation.Arrangements have been entrusted to Voss and Sons Funeral and Cremation Services of Seymour.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
