Preserve forever →Cary C. "Asteroid" Dunn
Passed March 10, 2026
Salt Lake City, UT
Cary C. Dunn passed away at the age of 70 in Salt Lake City on March 10, 2026, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his wife, Marilee (Chisholm) Dunn, his children Kim (Dunn) O’Neill and Prescott Dunn, and his son-in-laws Andrew O’Neill and Sam Leonhart. His grandchildren, Bernard and Lillian O’Neill, were the light of his life.
A graduate of the University of Utah, where he was a lifelong member of Beta Theta Pi, Cary went on to earn his Master of Architecture from Virginia Tech. He enjoyed a long career working with Construction Management Consultants and formed many lasting friendships during his final project at Waterford School in Sandy. A devoted University of Utah sports fan, he held season tickets to football and basketball games for more than 35 years. Each summer he looked forward to backpacking in the Wind Rivers with a close circle of friends, and every fall he eagerly awaited the first snow so he could ski with the “Lemmings” at Solitude Ski Resort, where he was affectionately known as “Asteroid.” He rarely missed his weekly poker nights with high school friends. Cary’s creativity found expression through his photography of nature and his travels, and he was nearly always whistling or tapping out the rhythm of a favorite song.
He was preceded in death by his father, W. Prescott Dunn Jr., and his uncle, James R. Dunn. His mother, Marian C. Dunn, resides in Salt Lake City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Odyssey House of Utah, where Cary served on the board since 1991.
