Carolyn Sue Winnett
December 25, 1934— March 13, 2026
Wood River, IL
Carolyn Sue Winnett, 91, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026. Born on Christmas Day in 1934 in Greenup, Illinois, Carolyn was a sweet yet strong woman who found joy in reading, entertaining family and friends, and devoting herself to volunteer work. Her deep commitment to literacy and food security inspired her longtime service on the Wood River Library Board and Foundation Board, and she was the driving force behind TWIGS, the city’s Free Summer Lunch Program. Professionally, she worked as a real estate broker and in the Human Resources department at Wood River Hospital.
Carolyn is survived by her children, Mickie (Bob) Compton, Stephanie Schuppan, Susie (David) Knetzer, and Joan Bender; grandchildren Chris Knetzer, Brian Knetzer, Michelle Compton, Alicia Renick, Alex Bender, and Julie Bender; and great-grandchildren Justin Knetzer and Addison Knetzer. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Steve Winnett; her sister, Marilyn Kuykendall; and her son-in-law, Ken Schuppan.
Those who knew Carolyn will remember her generous spirit and the quiet determination with which she cared for her community and family. Her values of compassion and service continue to live on through the many lives she touched.
