Carolyn Sue Bruce

Carolyn Sue Bruce, age 76, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of March 6, 2026, at her home on Black River Lake, surrounded by her family and her devoted husband of 61 years, George Bruce.

Born on May 15, 1949, in Jena, Louisiana, to Burl Jackson “Bob” Cockerham and Vivian Loudustamona Allen Cockerham, Carolyn spent many years in Georgetown, Louisiana, where she built a life centered on faith, family, and unwavering devotion. She and George later retired to their cherished home on Black River Lake, where they created countless memories with their children, grandchildren, and friends.

Carolyn was a strong and beautiful woman who loved her family fiercely and stood firmly for those she cared about. She was never afraid to speak her mind, and those who had her in their corner knew they had a loyal champion. A faithful wife and partner to George for more than six decades, she shared with him a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Together they enjoyed hunting and fishing, road trips out West with their children, travels to Hawaii, and nearly yearly visits to the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee.

She was a loving mother to her three children and made it her priority to pass down a love for the Lord and His ways. Carolyn took great pride in caring for her home and family. She enjoyed cooking and baking—her famous peanut butter cakes were beloved by many—along with crocheting and keeping her home neat and tidy. Those who knew her remember her sitting in her chair with her crocheting basket nearby, a bowl of salt water taffy within reach, and a heart full of love for whoever walked through the door, along with her carefully guarded candy stash in the bottom drawer of the refrigerator.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings Richard Cockerham, Robert Cockerham, Wayne Cockerham, and Sandra Cockerham Cline; and her beloved grandson, Bradley Bruce.

Carolyn is survived by her husband, George Bruce of Jonesville, Louisiana; her children, Melissa Vogel and husband Calvin of Kinder, Louisiana, Steve Bruce and wife Michelle of Jonesville, Louisiana, and Dannie Keene and husband Dusty of Brookhaven, Mississippi; her sister, Mary Jane Cockerham; her grandchildren, Chenoa Hooper and husband Michael of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Stephanie Bruce and fiancé Josh Berry of Deville, Louisiana, Justin Allbritton and wife Epiphany of Brookhaven, Mississippi, Hayden Vogel and wife Shelby of Kinder, Louisiana, and Emily Maxwell and husband Joshua of Brookhaven, Mississippi; and a host of great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren who brought her tremendous joy.
