Caroline Palmer ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service - Concord on Mar. 10, 2026.Caroline Palmer passed away on February 21st at her home at Carleton-Willard Village in Bedford, MA, with her children at her bedside. Caroline was predeceased by her husband of fifty years, Walter Henderson Palmer of Weston.Caroline leaves her four children, Rebecca Kirk of East Falmouth; Walter Palmer (Steve) and his wife Katherine, of Salem, MA; Suzi Gornall and her husband, James, of Aiken, SC; and Amie Kaplan and her husband, Andrew, of Sunapee, NH. She also leaves nine beloved grandchildren: Peter Kirk and his wife April; Andrew Kirk and his wife Maggie Bogosian, Paul Kirk and his wife Dominique; and Elizabeth Kirk; Jamie Gornall; Alison Shepard and her husband Robert; Hannah Palmer; Georgia Grady; and Owen Grady. She leaves many beloved nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, and great-grandchildren.Caroline was raised in Cleveland, OH, the middle daughter of Josephine Cannon Watt and Richard Hamilton Watt. She was pre-deceased by her older sister, Marian Watt Heston, and leaves her younger sister, Jane Watt Shapard, of Cleveland. She graduated from the Hathaway Brown School and from Smith College (class of 1952) with a degree in History. During those years Caroline's family spent summers in West Falmouth MA, staying at the West Falmouth Inn before purchasing a house on Chapoquoit Island in1949. This house became a treasured gathering place for family and friends for the next fifty years.Mrs. Palmer loved music and was a regular Boston Symphony Orchestra subscriber. She actively supported the New England Conservatory, the Walnut Hill School, and other institutions training young musicians. She and Walter hosted many music-themed parties for friends and family, and often hired aspiring musicians from these several organizations to help them progress in their careers.Caroline loved to travel. As a child she travelled throughout America and Europe with her parents and sisters, and she retained her curiosity about people, places, and cultures all her life. As an adult she visited China, Japan, India, and much of Western Europe, and made many friends in her journeys. She collected a long list of favorite places in the world. She particularly loved sharing her adventures with her family. Her grandchildren fondly remember accompanying her on trips to Switzerland, Ireland, the American Rockies, the Panama Canal, and many other destinations. And she often underwrote travel adventures for her children and grandchildren, even if she was unable to travel herself.As a young mother of a growing family in Weston, Mrs. Palmer volunteered or worked for several organizations including the Junior League of Boston, helping to organize the Bargain Box thrift store and the Decorators' Show House; the Smith College Alumnae Association, as Treasurer; and The Perkins School for the Blind, in administration. Later in life, she and Walter led or supported many non-profit organizations and community initiatives. She found her work with the New England Conservatory and Walnut Hill School and her support of students in the performing arts particularly gratifying.Caroline was a long-time supporter of mission-based organizations Doctors Without Borders and Planned Parenthood, believing that care for children and families is essential for the well-being of humanity.A memorial service honoring Caroline's life will be held at Carleton-Willard Village in Bedford, MA, on Saturday, May 9th at 11 am. All are invited.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Caroline's honor be made to Doctors Without Borders.Arrangements are entrusted to Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
