Carmen Curkendall ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by Acly-Stover Funeral Home - Corning on Mar. 17, 2026.Carmen L. Curkendall, of Corning, New York, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. While our hearts are broken, we are grateful for the countless memories she gave us and the love she shared so freely throughout her life.Carmen was born in Ithaca, New York, on January 14, 1961, the daughter of William Lee Curkendall Sr. and Jean Elizabeth Haynes. From the very beginning, Carmen had a spirit that drew people to her. She had a special way of making everyone feel welcome, accepted, and loved.Earlier in life, Carmen worked in the housekeeping department at Corning Hospital. Later, she devoted her time and energy to what mattered most to her, her home and her family. Being a mother and grandmother was the role she treasured above all others.Carmen's home was a place where everyone felt comfortable. She loved cooking and sharing meals, filling the house with warmth, laughter, and the smell of something delicious on the stove. Friends of her children quickly became her own "extra kids," and she loved them just the same. Her door, her table, and her heart were always open. She found joy in life's simple pleasures. She loved music, especially going to live concerts. She loved gathering with family to watch Shrek together and could often be found faithfully watching her favorite show, Judge Judy. Those small moments meant everything to her because they were spent with the people she loved. For 43 years, Carmen shared her life with the love of her life and devoted partner, Jon Sonner of Corning. Together they built a lifetime of memories filled with love, loyalty, laughter, and unwavering support for one another. Through life's ups and downs, they stood side by side, creating a home filled with warmth and family. Together they shared their son, Mickey, who was a great source of pride and love for them both. Their bond was one of deep friendship, commitment, and quiet understanding, the kind that only grows stronger with time. Jon was not only her partner, but her best friend, and the life they shared together was one of Carmen's greatest treasures.Carmen was a proud and loving mother to Mike Curkendall and his wife Wendy of Painted Post, Michelle Wilson and her husband Terry of Corning, and Mickey Sonner and his wife Alexi of Caton. Her children were her pride and joy.She was also a deeply devoted grandmother to Dillon, Mercedes, Blake, Austin, Gavin, Parker, Spencer, and Dom, and a loving great-grandmother to Landyn, Kendall, Greyson, Wyatt, Wrenleigh, whom she lovingly called "Red," and Harper. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her endless happiness and were truly the light of her life.Carmen is also survived by her sisters, Billie Giggee and her husband Charles of Waverly, Tina Curkendall of Elmira, and Pauline Curkendall of Elmira and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, William "Jr." Curkendall, her sister, Crystal Curkendall, and her partner's father, Claude Sonner.Carmen also dearly loved her dog, Skippy, who passed before her but remained forever in her heart. Those who knew Carmen will remember her for her kindness, her laughter, and the way she loved people so completely. She made others feel like family, and she leaves behind a legacy of warmth, compassion, and unconditional love that will live on through everyone whose life she touched. The family will hold a private service to honor Carmen's life. Burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira, New York.In memory of Carmen, memorial donations may be made to Corning Hospital, 1 Guthrie Drive, Corning, NY 14830.Though she is gone from our sight, Carmen's love will forever remain in our hearts. Her love will live on in every family gathering, every shared meal, every laugh around the table, and in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know her.**We are not affiliated with any other websites but www.aclystoverfuneralhome.com**To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Carmen L.
