July 27, 1937— March 12, 2026
Layton, UT
Carl Eugene Hymas, of Layton, Utah, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2026.
Gene was born to Jesse and LaMona Hymas on July 27, 1937, in Heyburn, Idaho. He enjoyed a happy childhood playing in the Snake River, excelling in school and sports, helping on the family hobby farm, and riding motorcycles with his father. He was a loving brother to his three sisters.
He began his college studies in Moscow, Idaho, where he participated in ROTC. This experience launched a distinguished career in the United States Air Force. He continued his education throughout his life, eventually retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel with a PhD. Afterward, he was recruited by companies such as TRW and Northrop Grumman to lead teams of engineers. He was deeply dedicated to his work and known for mentoring those on his teams with genuine care and affection. Colleagues often teased him that he never quite mastered retirement, as it took him several attempts to get it right.
A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gene served in many callings, including bishop, stake presidency counselor, and mission president. His favorite role was that of home teacher, where he sincerely loved and cared for those he visited. His life reflected his deep testimony through humble, loving service.
Above all, Gene was devoted to his beloved wife, Dianna. They were married on June 30, 1961, in the Salt Lake Temple and shared 65 beautiful years together. They raised five wonderful daughters and remained happily in love throughout their lives. Gene rarely spoke of his daughters without calling them “wonderful.” Even in his final days, when communication was difficult, he would whisper “five awesome daughters” and light up at the sight of his sweetheart’s kiss. He was the best husband and father his girls could have asked for.
Though he rarely pursued personal hobbies because of his devotion to family, Gene found great joy in BYU football and ice cream. He loved welcoming visitors with a trip to the ice cream freezer and taught his family that ice cream fills in the cracks and should never be eaten alone. His love for both traditions will live on through his family.
Gene is survived by his wife Dianna, their five daughters—Lona, Michelle, Rhonda, Tonya, and Annette—their spouses, 22 grandchildren, and 33 great-grandchildren.
