Calvin F. Shannon, 73, of Union Township, passed away Monday afternoon, March 16, 2026, following an extended illness.
Mr. Shannon was born February 9, 1953, in New Castle, a son of the late Paul and Martha (Robinson) Shannon. After graduating from Union Area High School in 1971, he earned an associate degree from Penn State University, Shenango Valley Campus, and later a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Youngstown State University.
For many years, Calvin worked as a Quality Assurance Specialist at the Shippingport Nuclear Power Plant, later retiring from First Energy’s Neville Island Nuclear Plant.
With a lifelong passion for serving others, Calvin was a 52-year member of the Union Township Vol. Fire Dept. He concurrently served as Forest Fire Warden for 25 years, and also served as a Lieutenant for several years.
Calvin was a member of First Presbyterian Church of New Castle, where he served as a Deacon and served as the Co-Chairman of the Glory Grill for 14 years.
An avid gardener, he was also a dedicated Pittsburgh Steelers, Penn State Nittany Lion, and Union Area High School sports fan. Calvin especially enjoyed watching his granddaughter, Korynne, compete at her softball games.
Calvin is survived by two sons, Corey P. Shannon (Shannon Suhr), of Union Twp., and Nicholas Shannon (Laura), of North Ridgeville, OH; three grandchildren, Korynne, Finn, and Grady Shannon; five brothers, Jim Shannon (Hazel), John Shannon (Rosemary), Walter Shannon, Dale Shannon (Trish), and Leslie Shannon; two sisters, Alice Kellogg and Barbara Shannon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Calvin was preceded in death by a sister, Sally Boyer; and a brother, Robert Shannon.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be directed to the Union Twp. Vol. Fire Dept., 304 S. Scotland Lane, New Castle, PA 16101; or First Presbyterian Church, 125 N. Jefferson St., New Castle, PA 16101.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday (3-19-26) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 111 W. Falls St., New Castle.
A celebration of his life will begin at 7 p.m. with honors being rendered by the Union Vol. Fire Dept., followed by a service conducted by Rev. Lorrie Gherring-Burick, pastor of First Presbyterian Church.
Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery, Neshannock Twp.
