Bynum Lunsford, affectionately known to his grandchildren as "Papa B," passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 28, 2026, in Mars Hill, North Carolina. Born on March 16, 1944, in Buncombe County, Bynum dedicated a significant part of his life to serving his country and community. He was a proud Vietnam War Veteran, having honorably served in the United States Army.
Bynum’s professional journey was rooted in his long-standing career in Civil Service, where he worked as a Land Surveyor for the US Government. His career led him to various places, including Jacksonville, Florida, and Los Angeles, California. However, he called Mars Hill home for the past 30 years, where he became a beloved member of the community.
He leaves behind step-children Natalie Loftin, and Robert "Bobby" Scialo and his wife Laura; and daughter-in-law, Sheila Camby. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Bynum is preceded in death by his parents, Bynum McCoy Lunsford, Sr., and Pauline Gillis Lunsford; his beloved wife, Judith Beck "Judy" Lunsford; and step-sons, Robert Camby and Mark Scialo, whose memories will be cherished by those who knew them.
A graveside service to honor Bynum's life will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Gardner-Gillis Cemetery, located at 2491 Paint Fork Road, Mars Hill, NC. Friends and family are invited to gather to pay their respects and celebrate his life.
