November 24, 1959— March 14, 2026
Ludington, MI
Bruce L. Gillett, age 66, of Ludington, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of March 14, 2026, surrounded by the family who adored him.
Born on November 24, 1959, in Ludington, Bruce was the son of the late William “Bill” and Marion (Vance) Gillett, the ninth of ten children. A 1978 graduate of Mason County Central, he excelled as a track athlete and qualified for the state meet in the 100-yard and 220-yard dash. On September 1, 1990, he married the love of his life, Brenda Funk. Their swift engagement after just six weeks of dating grew into a devoted 35-year marriage.
Bruce worked for many years as a skilled meat cutter and department manager at Farmer John’s, Favorite Foods, and Prevo’s. A biking accident in August 2000 caused a brachial plexus injury that ended his career in that field. He then joined Brenda at Miss Brenda’s Daycare, where he became known as “Mr. Bruce” and, most cherished of all, “Papa Bruce.” With his compassion, kindness, and lively sense of humor, he touched the lives of countless children.
A man of deep loyalties and quiet faith, Bruce was a lifelong Michigan Wolverines and Detroit Red Wings fan who proudly shared his love of sports with his sons. He assisted the Ludington High School football program for many years and found joy in hunting, fishing, warm weather, and especially time spent with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Gillett; sons Brent (Lindy) Gillett and Sean (Leah) Gillett; siblings William (Roberta) Gillett and Beth (David) Dufon; and many nieces and nephews. He leaves behind his four beloved grandchildren—Jameslee, Juliette, Camden, and Bryson Gillett—who were the lights of his life.
