Bruce Edwin "Butch" Medford

Bruce “Butch” Edwin Medford, 79, of the Stamey Cove community in Haywood County, passed away on March 8, 2026. Born on July 22, 1946, Butch spent most of his life in the mountains he loved, surrounded by family and friends who filled his days with stories and laughter.

A 1964 graduate of Bethel High School, he served honorably in the United States Army National Guard before retiring from Champion/International Paper in Canton. Known for his strong work ethic and deep community spirit, Butch spent many years in the early 1980s as the announcer for Bethel Youth football games, encouraging children and serving as a positive role model. He also brought joy to countless people across North Carolina as “Ernest” in the beloved comedy duo “Ernest and Elwood,” performing with his good friend Bobby Cheek. A lifelong lover of music, he played guitar every Wednesday with his “Pickin Buddies” and sang with heartfelt faith at Piney Grove Methodist Church, where he was a devoted member.

Above all, Butch was a man of genuine kindness who never met a stranger. He cherished conversations with friends and neighbors, especially those at Sav-Mor Grocery in Canton, where he could often be found greeting everyone who passed by. He was a devoted Christian, a proud veteran, and a loyal friend.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Elaine Ball Medford; his daughter, Angie Medford Warren (Scott); nephew Chad Hennessy; niece Kim Stellman; great-nieces and great-nephews; and Keith Rogers, who was like a brother to him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce R. and Nell Harkins Medford; his sister, Wanda Medford Hennessy; and his niece, Kristi Pace Chismar.

His family finds comfort in knowing Butch is now in his heavenly home, held in the grace he so often sang about. His presence will continue to be felt in the mountains of Stamey Cove and in the hearts of all who loved him.
