Brittany Marie Tainter, known as Miskwaa-Giizhigookwe or “Red Sky Woman,” passed away on March 14, 2026, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, at the age of 35, surrounded by loved ones.
Born on October 1, 1990, in Racine, Wisconsin, to Tom and Shelby (Taylor) Tainter, Brittany grew up in the Altoona area where she graduated from Altoona Schools. An active participant in sports and music throughout her youth, she pursued her passion for art by earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. She began her studies at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities College of Design and later transferred to UW-Stout to complete her degree.
After working in the insurance industry, Brittany returned to her true calling and founded Giizhig Design Company. Her creative work included company logos, websites, and notable projects such as transforming historical Chippewa Flowage maps and wording into commemorative t-shirts for the New Post Committee’s 100 Year Flooding Remembrance. She also designed branding for Northwestern University’s Land Acknowledgement, Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council Programs, and Akii-gikinoo’amaading Charter School. Deeply connected to nature, she found peace camping, sitting by bonfires, and listening to the loons on the Chippewa Flowage. An accomplished vocalist, traditional beadworker, and jewelry maker, Brittany shared her art generously with friends and community. Her kind heart, advocacy for justice, and ability to bring laughter and joy to others left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
Brittany is survived by her fiancé, Seth Roberts, her parents Tom and Shelby Tainter, and her siblings Donna (Michael) Miller, Tommy (Meagan) Tainter, and Alyse Tainter. She was preceded in death by her grandparents Larry “Buck” and Shirley (Nickence) Tainter, Julia Cloud and Donald Jackson, her uncle Larry Tainter, and her aunt Sandy Taylor.
