Brian Douglas Carbaugh
July 5, 1962— March 5, 2026
Elkins, WV
Brian Douglas Carbaugh, 63, of Elkins, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, surrounded by his family. Born on July 5, 1962, in Hanover, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Frances “Frank” Carbaugh and Barbara Smith Carbaugh Fancher, who survives in Maryland.
Brian served his country with honor in the United States Navy as an Electronics Technician on active duty from 1981 to 1987 and in the Reserves from 2001 to 2006. He later worked as an IT specialist for the FBI in Clarksburg until his recent retirement due to health challenges. Earlier in his career, he was employed as an electronics technician, telecommunications and network engineer, and applications system analyst. A lifelong learner, he earned degrees from St. Johns at Prospect Hall, Governor Thomas Johnson High School, Capitol College, and Colorado State University Global.
He is survived by his wife of twenty years, Brandi, his devoted mother Barbara, and his children Ben, Garrett, Kate, Kyrsten, Devan, and Zahra, all of Elkins. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren Elena, Oakley, Jasper, Arayaa, Orion, Maverick, and Rayda. Brian was preceded in death by his father and his stepfather, Jack Fancher.
Brian lived a life defined by kindness, generosity, and deep devotion to family. He made frequent trips to California, Maryland, Virginia, and beyond to stay connected with loved ones. An avid runner, he participated in numerous races each year, often in support of cancer research in honor of his father, including a 50-mile run in a 24-hour cancer event. He loved to travel, cherished his last visit to Colorado to see his son Ben on his mission, and carried fond memories of his Navy days in San Diego, where he once jumped from the cliffs at La Jolla. Known for his quick wit and ability to make others laugh with random movie quotes and GIFs, Brian had a heart of gold and was always ready to offer help or a listening ear. He found great comfort in the companionship of his dog Kratos and cat Buddycat, who often stayed by his side while he worked from home.
