Bobby Wayne Ray, a devoted family man, U.S. Navy veteran, and longtime member of the Austin Police Department, passed away in Kyle, Texas on March 6, 2026. Born on July 4, 1942, in Austin, Texas, Bobby took great pride in his heritage as a descendant of Gordon C. Jennings, the oldest defender of the Alamo. He lived 83 years guided by a deep sense of duty, honor, and love for his family and community.
After serving in the U.S. Navy from 1960 to 1964, Bobby joined the Austin Police Department in January 1965. Over the next 28 years, he served in multiple roles including beat cop, motorcycle patrol officer, and senior sergeant, earning the lasting respect of his colleagues and the community he protected.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Pamela Ann Miles-Ray, whom he married in 1992, and by his nephew, Lt. Larry Kolb, who was killed in the line of duty with the Kendall County Sheriff's Office in 1999. Bobby is survived by his daughter Bridget Redpath, his son Donald Wayne Ray and wife Tina, and his daughter Pamela Ray Harber. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Brian Toy, Chivonne Toy, Holly Lucas, Devin Redpath, Derek Harber, Kevin Harber, and Ryan Harber. He shared a close bond with his sisters and held a special place in his heart for all his nieces and nephews, with whom he created many cherished memories at July 4th picnics and family gatherings.
Bobby will be remembered as a true Texan who lived a life of quiet honor, steadfast commitment to service, and deep love for his family.
