Beverley “Bev” Lee Alexander, of Kensington, Maryland, died on March 7, 2026, at the age of 94. Born on December 2, 1931, in New Market, Virginia, to William and Goldie Alexander, Bev began his long career at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory on March 12, 1951, at the age of 19. He remained deeply connected to his Virginia roots throughout his life, cherishing his second home in Winchester as one of his favorite places.
Bev enjoyed a remarkable 73-year career at APL, earning numerous awards and contributing to important research, including early work with underwater cameras during deep-sea diving expeditions. He continued to enjoy collecting sharks’ teeth and sand dollars long after retirement. In his quieter moments, he found simple pleasure in weekend trips to Walmart and Cracker Barrel.
Preceded in death by his parents, his brother Robert G. Alexander, and his sister Polly A. Alexander, Bev is survived by his dear wife, Nancy Coon; stepchildren Douglas Coon, Julianne Harris, and Steven Coon; his brother William “Bill” F. Alexander; his sister Peggy A. Alexander; and many cherished friends.
