Betty Philbeck McFarland

1940 — 2026

Shelby, NC

Betty Philbeck McFarland, a cherished friend, loving mother, devoted grandmother, and great-grandmother, entered eternal rest on March 10, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on April 24, 1940, in Cleveland County, she spent her final days surrounded by loved ones in Shelby, North Carolina.

A lifelong member of New Buffalo Baptist Church, Betty lived out her faith with quiet dedication, inspiring those around her through her warmth and steadfast devotion to family and community. In her kitchen she found special joy, where her cooking and baking, especially her famous fried apple pies, brought comfort and delight to family gatherings for many years. She also took great pleasure in collecting vintage glassware, treasuring each piece as a link to the past.

Betty and her late husband, James Edward McFarland, shared a deep love of travel, exploring new places together and creating lasting memories. Her generous spirit led her to volunteer regularly at the Hospice Store, where she offered kindness and support to those in need.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arnold and Alice Philbeck; her husband, James Edward McFarland; her sisters, Francine Philbeck, Myrtle Owensby, Nancy Causby, and Birtha Yelton; and her brother, Robert Philbeck. Betty is survived by her son, Tim McFarland; her daughters, Pam Bolton and husband David, Fredia Hawkins and husband Jeff, and Diane McIntyre with Bryon; her brothers, Bobby Philbeck and Shirley, and Michael Philbeck; her grandchildren, Kali Wright, Chrissy Holland, Emily Sturgill, Jonathan Herndon, Blake McFarland, Charley Lavender, Megan Black, Sarah Rathbun, Rebeca McIntyre, and Paige Gamble; 21 great-grandchildren; and her dear sisters-in-law, Louise Shook and husband John, and Pat Marion. Her spirit of love, warmth, and compassion remains with all who knew her.
