Betty Jean McCullough, affectionately known as “Granny,” of Batesburg, South Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at the age of 88. Born in Greenwood, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Colie Hughes and Lucille Hollingsworth Maroney. She was the beloved wife of the late Vernon E. “Freck” McCullough and a longtime member of Beulah Baptist Church.
Betty found joy in attending yard sales, cooking for her family, and spending time with those she loved. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister-in-law whose greatest delight was her grandchildren and their children. Her warm and generous spirit touched everyone who knew her.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Kay Puckett (Frank); sons, Terry McCullough and Danny McCullough (Sonya); grandchildren, Joel Puckett, Jason McCullough, Chris McCullough (April), Jared McCullough, Jessica Cecil (Charles), Stephanie Stone, Josh Brock (Jennifer), Lee McCullough, Jodi Eyer, Kristen McCullough, Will Surber, and Ben Surber; along with 16 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Sallie Hughes. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Debra Surber; sons, Wayne and Keith McCullough; and siblings, Dot Kneece, Cleo Burgess, Raymond Hughes, Faye Hall, and Carolyn Smith.
