Betty Jane Watson

March 23, 1929 March 11, 2026

McKinney, TX

Betty Jane Watson, of McKinney, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026, just short of her 97th birthday. Born on March 23, 1929, to Dewey Heard and Irene (Hudson) Heard in Dow, Oklahoma, Betty lived a life marked by deep love, dedication to learning, and a genuine gift for connecting with others.

A proud graduate of Haileyville Public Schools, Betty earned her bachelor’s degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Oklahoma. At just 19, she hosted “Aunt Betty’s Story Hour” on KTMC radio in McAlester, sharing beloved children’s stories with young listeners. She then devoted more than three decades to teaching, first for two years in Oklahoma and then for 30 years in the Texas public school system, where she taught first grade and inspired countless students with her passion for education.

On August 30, 1952, Betty married Charles Wayne Watson. The couple shared 42 joyful years together until his passing. A daughter of an original enrollee of the Choctaw Nation, she remained connected to her heritage and, after retirement, volunteered at the Heard Museum. For 31 years she was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in McKinney, where her warm smile and welcoming spirit touched many.

Betty had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel special. Known as a true people person who never met a stranger, she brightened every room with her kindness and compassion. She is survived by her daughter, Tammy Kraman and husband Mike of Plano, Texas; grandchildren Mel Kraman of Vancouver, Washington, and Sarah Roberts and husband Tyler of Salt Lake City, Utah; her sister Suzanne Heard of Haileyville, Oklahoma, who was born on Betty’s ninth birthday; and many other loving family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Wayne Watson, her parents Dewey and Irene Heard, her sister Marcella Presson, and her grandparents Peter James Hudson and Amanda Jane.
