Betty J. Hixson Kresin-Hillsman, 87, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away on March 10, 2026. Born on August 18, 1938, in Highland, Kansas, to Jessie Mae (Roesch) and William Hixson Jr., she lived a full life marked by deep faith, boundless energy, and unwavering devotion to her family.
After graduating from Benton High School, Betty moved to Michigan, where she attended Macomb County College and worked at Holy Cross Hospital. She later returned to Missouri, earned degrees from Platte College and Missouri Western State University, obtained her realtor’s license, and served as a Tupperware Supervisor. She also worked in the Buchanan County Courthouse Collectors Office and ran for Circuit Clerk and City Councilwoman. Above all, her faith remained her foundation, guiding a life centered on God and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Debbie Nelson-Mathers, sons Todd Nelson Sr. and Ronnie Polkingharn, grandson Todd Nelson Jr., sisters Teri Nolan, Martha Canchola, and Jackie Detweiler, and nephew Mark Canchola.
Betty is survived by her husband, Clarence “David” Hillsman, her children Steven Nelson (Angie), Tanya DeWeese (Leonard), and Betti Gilpin-Schmitt, all of St. Joseph, along with 13 grandchildren—including her first grandchild, Marshall Mathers III—numerous great-grandchildren, one brother, Robert Carl, and two sisters, Bernadine Clark and Susie Major. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, she touched everyone she met with her kindness, generosity, and ability to make others feel valued and loved. Her family will carry her sweet and vibrant spirit with them always.
