Betty Essenburg

Betty Essenburg, age 97, passed away peacefully at her home on March 7, 2026, surrounded by the family she cherished. Born on May 9, 1928, in Holland, Michigan, to Neal and Jeanette Kuiken, she was one of five children and graduated from Holland High School in 1946.

Following a blind date, Betty married the love of her life, Paul Essenburg, on her birthday in 1952. They shared 73 years of devoted marriage, building a life centered on faith and family. A woman of great creativity, Betty’s hands were rarely still. She found joy in many crafts, most notably weaving cross bookmarks to support her church’s mission work. She and Paul shared a spirit of adventure, enjoying years of sailing, motor home camping, wintering in Florida, and traveling the world together. Above all, she treasured her family and made every gathering special with her presence and care.

Betty was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her beloved husband, Paul; her daughters, Nancy Essenburg and Sandy (Steve) Heerspink; her grandchildren, Adam (Susan) Heerspink, Lee (Bethany) Heerspink, James Hoving, and Katey (Matt) Bruursema; and five cherished great-grandchildren.
