Betty Best Bailey

1933 — 2026

Bedford, TX

Betty Best Bailey, 92, of Bedford, Texas, formerly of Beckville, Texas, passed away on March 16, 2026, surrounded by her family after a short battle with Bulbar onset ALS. Born on December 12, 1933, in Houston, Texas, to Connie Carter (C.C.) and Agnes Eve Childress Best, she graduated from Reagan High School in 1951. She attended Sam Houston State University on a cello scholarship, majoring in piano, and later earned her Bachelor of Music and Master of Education from Stephen F. Austin State University.

Betty met her husband Bill at Sam Houston State University, where both were music majors and members of the band. They shared 67 years of marriage and a fulfilling life in education, teaching together for 38 years in the Beckville Independent School District. She began her career teaching music and later became a beloved third-grade teacher. After retiring, she continued sharing her passion for music by giving private piano lessons for 25 years, finding great joy in her students.

A woman of many talents, Betty was an accomplished seamstress who created quilts for children’s charities as well as bridal gowns, prom dresses, clothing, costumes, drapes, and bedspreads for family and friends. She also loved crafting, making special gifts for her piano students each year and creating beautiful decorations for her home and others. She and Bill took great pride in tending their yard, which brought them both deep satisfaction. Active members of Central Baptist Church in Carthage, they often provided special music on Sunday mornings, with Betty accompanying Bill on piano as he played saxophone.

Betty and Bill built their only home in the Beckville community, where they lived their entire married life surrounded by the love and support of friends and neighbors. In their later years, they moved to an assisted living facility to be near family, yet Beckville remained their true home. They were especially grateful to live close to their only daughter and two granddaughters, enjoying frequent visits with them.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her parents, Connie and Agnes Best; and brother-in-law Dave Gorrie. She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Meskini and husband Mohamed; granddaughters Amira and Rania; sister-in-law Linda Gorrie; niece LuAnne Miller and husband Keith and sons Cody and Zach Helstrom; nephew Bryan Gorrie and wife April; brother-in-law Johnny Sullivan and nephews John and partner Dan, Jeff and wife Carla and daughter Elaine, and James and wife Sam; sister Becky Sullivan; and a host of cherished friends and former students.
