Bettie Thompson Rathel, 92, of Belleview, Florida, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2026. Born on April 5, 1933, in Beaulaville, North Carolina, to James Abram Bell and Mary Ellen Daugherty, she lived a life deeply rooted in her faith in God and her unwavering devotion to her family. Known for her kindness and quiet strength, Bettie touched countless lives through her church and community, always reflecting the love and grace she carried within.
She worked for many years as an upholstery teacher in Adult Education, generously sharing her skills with students. At First Baptist Church of Belleview, she served faithfully as secretary under Pastor Damon Walker and, together with Betty Walker, helped establish and operate Little Friends, a ministry that brought care and support to many children and families in the area. Bettie found great joy in sewing, cooking, and gardening, often expressing her love for her family through handmade gifts and cherished meals. She especially treasured the summers she spent in Tennessee with her grandchildren, creating memories that will remain with them always.
Bettie was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who leaves behind a large and devoted family. She is survived by her four children, Larry Thompson (Patty), Johnnie Thompson (Lori), Kathy Scherer (Rick), and Steve Thompson (Robin); 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Her faith, gentle spirit, and the love she poured into her family will continue to live on in all those who knew and cherished her.
