Betsy Whittington Binswanger

Betsy Whittington Binswanger, loving wife of Millard Binswanger for 44 years, passed away on March 10, 2026 at her home in Richmond, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late John Jay and Mary Elizabeth “Spooks” Whittington. Betsy grew up in Nassawadox on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and was a member of the first graduating class of Broadwater Academy. After graduating from Averett College, she moved to Richmond, where she taught school and met and married Millard.

Betsy and Millard shared a full life together, making many dear friends during their winters on Sanibel Island and summers on Sarah Creek. She was known for her warmth, her devotion to family, and the quiet grace she brought to every relationship.

She is survived by her husband Millard; his daughter Ellen Binswanger (David), whose love and support were a tremendous comfort during Betsy’s illness; her sister Suzanne Ames (Paige); her brother Jay Whittington; niece Kelly Warren (Ty); nephews Tyler Ames (Gina), John Whittington (Kate), and Scott Whittington (Ellen); sister-in-law Ann Stern; and grandchildren Alex Church (Emily), Adam Church (Grace), and Hunter Nolan. She was predeceased by her sister-in-law Sharon Whittington and her brother Bill Whittington.
