Douglassville, TX

Bessie Neal Heath of Douglassville, Texas, lived a life deeply rooted in faith, family, and quiet strength. Born on August 28, 1932, to Weaver and Cora Mae McCoy, she grew up in a time when hard work and home-cooked meals shaped her character. At fourteen she met Ben Joseph Heath, the only boy she ever dated, and together they built a simple, steady life centered on faith, hard work, and the joy of being together. They shared a love for bluegrass festivals, camping at Albert Pike, trail rides, and dancing. Above all, they cherished raising their four children, who remained their greatest blessing.

For many years Bessie served as Secretary to the Superintendent for the Douglassville and Atlanta ISD, bringing leadership, competence, and her signature sass to the role. Yet those who knew her best remember her most for the nourishing meals she prepared for her family day after day. No matter how long her workday had been, she ensured her loved ones gathered around the table, offering her care through simple, consistent acts of service. Her priorities never wavered: family first, with her church family always close behind. A devoted sports fan, she seldom missed a game involving her beloved Atlanta Rabbits or the Dallas Cowboys, sharing her infectious enthusiasm with everyone around her. She loved filling her home with family and friends, except when the Cowboys were playing.

Bessie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ben, and her daughter Angela Heath Barnes. She is survived by her daughters Karen Heath Tromza and Kay Heath Gilbert, her son Curtis Heath and his wife Tammy, and her son-in-law Randy Barnes. She leaves behind grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each carrying a measure of her spirited determination. Her life reflected the words she treasured from Proverbs 31:30: “Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Those who loved her find comfort knowing she is now healed and at home, dancing in the presence of her Lord and Savior. Her legacy endures in the family she nurtured, the faith she passed down, and the countless warm memories she leaves behind.
