September 22, 1954— March 6, 2026
Terreton, ID
Bert George Niederer, 71, passed away at his home in Arizona on March 6, 2026. Born on September 22, 1954, in Rexburg, Idaho, to George Emil Niederer and Dorothy Davis Niederer, Bert spent much of his early life in Terreton, Idaho. He attended West Jefferson High School and graduated from Challis High School.
A quiet man with a strong presence, Bert could initially seem intimidating, yet those closest to him knew his heart was incredibly generous. His wit was sharp and quick, but he was the kind of person who showed up to help whenever needed. He believed in hard work and lived that value throughout his life. In his younger years, he worked as a cowboy on the D&D Ranch, a role he truly loved. After an injury ended his time there, he returned to school and began a new career, first as a welder at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory and later as a Health Physics Technician. He transferred to the Hanford site in Washington, where he worked for more than 20 years before retiring.
Bert loved the outdoors and found special joy in fishing, hunting, horses, and trap shooting. Horses were one of his greatest passions; he had a natural gift for working with them, training them with patience and calm confidence that earned their trust. He shared this love with his step-daughters, Candice Sines and Stephanie Huerta, teaching them horsemanship and taking them on many hunting, fishing, and camping adventures. He enjoyed rodeos and team roping, was known for his horsemanship, and was an active trap shooter and former president of the Connell Gun Club. He also loved gardening and took pride in growing vegetables, creating many family memories around harvesting green beans, corn, and strawberries together.
He is survived by his step-daughters, Candice Sines and Stephanie Huerta, and his grandson Booker. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters: Gailyn (Lynda) Peterson of Middleton, Idaho; Lynne Bain of Bountiful, Utah; Larry (Jayne) Niederer of Hamer, Idaho; Bill (Penny) Niederer of Kona, Hawaii; Merriloy (Dean) Paynter of Taylorville, Utah; Bob (Beckie) Niederer of Lyman, Wyoming; Lori Todd of Green Valley, Arizona; and Betty Niederer of Green Valley, Arizona. Bert was preceded in death by his parents, George Emil Niederer and Dorothy Davis Niederer; his step-mother, Maurine Peterson Niederer; his sister Marolyn McCormick; his brother Glenn Peterson; and his former spouses Carol Rankin and Janie Mitchell Niederer.
