Benjamin Conrad Wouters

August 8, 1961 March 9, 2026

Montgomery, AL

Dr. Benjamin Conrad Wouters, a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and respected physician, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2026, at the age of 64. He is survived by his loving wife Lisa Wouters, daughters Lauren Maloy (Matt), Sarah Horn, and Anna McNeill (Chris); grandchildren Beau and Reese Maloy, Michael, Samantha, Elizabeth, and Thomas Benjamin Horn, and Ensley, Hazel, and Rowan McNeill, along with many loving nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Ben was preceded in death by his mother Dr. Anne B. Wouters, father Dr. Freerk Wouters, adoptive father Dr. Fred Smith, and brother Dr. Erich Wouters.

Born on August 8, 1961, in Huntsville, Alabama, Ben was raised with a deep sense of responsibility and kindness that guided him throughout his life. He attended Emory University in Atlanta, where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and graduated with honors in Chemistry. He earned his MD and PhD from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1987, followed by a residency in Surgery and Neurology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident of Neurology in 1996 and 1997. He then moved to Montgomery, Alabama, joining Neurology Consultants of Montgomery, leading Jackson Hospital’s stroke team, and publishing in medical journals until his retirement in 2010.

To those who knew him as a physician, Dr. Wouters was a steady presence, careful listener, and source of comfort during life’s most difficult moments. His patients and colleagues remembered his compassion, wisdom, and the reassurance he brought into every room. Outside of medicine, Ben cherished time with family and friends. A cancer survivor himself, he was a constant source of encouragement and laughter, always reminding those around him to celebrate life’s small moments. He enjoyed hunting, sporting clays, reading, visiting his children and grandchildren, and cheering for Auburn football.
