Barbara S. Mechalas passed away on March 5, 2026. Born on April 4, 1937, in Dayton, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Dale J. and Irene (Carpenter) Lutz. She spent most of her life in the Ambler, Pennsylvania area.
A professional soprano vocalist, Barbara loved singing throughout her life, whether in the church choir, performing at music venues across the country, or enjoying karaoke with family. Her children cherished the memories of her calling on birthdays to sing “Happy Birthday.” She worked for a time at Society Hill Sound, a recording studio in Philadelphia, and was a familiar and welcoming presence at The Archive, the store owned by her son Dale.
She is survived by her seven children, Cheryl Ann Sokol-Byrne (Patrick Byrne), Dale Mechalas, Tamara Doyle (Tom), Brian Mechalas, Kevin Mechalas, Alayne Bianco (Vito), and Garrin Mechalas (Heather); nine grandchildren, Stephen, Thomas, Jenna, Cierra, Vito III, Niko, Geno, Alexis, and Kayla; and five great-grandchildren, Madelynn, Taelynn, Blakelynn, Parklynn, and Atlas. Barbara will be remembered as a kind person with a lively spirit who created lasting friendships wherever she went, and in her later years for the bright red hat she loved and always wore.
