Barbara Ruth Morseth
June 8, 1933— March 11, 2026
Montevideo, MN
Barbara Ruth Morseth, born June 8, 1933, in Appleton, Minnesota, to Howard and Alevene Cairns, passed away on March 11, 2026, at the age of 92. The oldest of five children, she grew up on the family farm and graduated from Appleton High School. From an early age, Barb displayed a deep love for music. She began piano lessons at seven, sang with joy, and remained active in musical pursuits throughout her school years. Gifted with a beautiful voice and the ability to play by ear, she often added her own expressive interpretations to pieces, a creative spirit that sometimes tested her teachers’ preference for strict adherence to the score.
After high school, Barb attended the University of Minnesota while working as a clerk typist. She later lived in Wichita, Kansas, before returning to Minneapolis, where she served as secretary to the manager of the Dyckman Hotel. During this time, she joined the Minneapolis Symphony Choir, continuing to nurture her vocal talents. In 1953, she married her high school sweetheart, Robert “Bob” Morseth. The couple welcomed two sons, Daniel and Timothy, and made their home on the family farm where Barb lived for the rest of her life. Over their 62 years of marriage, they remodeled the farmhouse into a warm gathering place filled with family memories.
Barb’s professional life included working as an Avon representative, serving as a bookkeeper for Ree Motors and Great Plains Natural Gas, and assisting in the office of Bob’s Appliance Service for more than 40 years. She furthered her musical education by taking courses at Southwest State University and, beginning in 1986, taught piano lessons from her home studio until 2019. A devoted musician, she sang in a Barbershop Quartet, directed the Christian Community Chorus and annual Easter musicals at Community Bible Church, and served for many years as pianist and organist at the United Methodist Church in Montevideo. She was a longtime member of the Fiesta Flora Society, Minnesota Valley Concert Association, American College of Musicians, and National Music Clubs.
In 1976, Barb experienced a profound spiritual awakening that deepened her faith and led her to devoted Bible study. She believed strongly in the power of prayer for healing and deliverance and readily offered prayer for others throughout her life. She is survived by her sons, Dan and Tim; grandson Josh Mickels and his wife Erin; great-grandchildren Halle and Max; her sister, Pat Shiroma; and sister-in-law, Sandra Cairns. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; sons Noel Robert and a stillborn baby; her parents; three brothers, John, David, and James Cairns; and brother-in-law Warren Shiroma.
