Barbara Jeanne Brownlee

Barbara Jeanne Brownlee

April 1, 1929 March 10, 2026

Prairie Village, KS

Barbara Jeanne Brownlee, born April 1, 1929, passed away on March 10, 2026, surrounded by family who loved her deeply and cared for her faithfully throughout her later years. She lived nearly 97 remarkable years marked by independence, generosity, curiosity, and an enduring connection to the people and places she cherished.

Born to Maynard and Marvel (Lee) Zeller, Barbara embraced her early rural roots in the Sedalia, Keats, and Manhattan, Kansas communities before building a full life in Kansas City, Johnson County, and Prairie Village. She was first married to Leo Riniker, with whom she had her son, Michael Riniker. Though that marriage ended, becoming a mother remained her greatest joy. She later endured the heartbreaking loss of Mike far too early, a sorrow she carried with grace and quiet strength. She then married the love of her life, William (Bill) Brownlee, and together they shared many happy years building a home in Kansas City.

Barbara’s passions brought joy to those around her. A devoted Kansas State University, Royals, and Chiefs fan, she and Bill held season tickets for the Chiefs for twenty years. When they could not attend, they hosted watch parties filled with Kansas City barbeque and pizza, often joined by cherished neighbors Larry and Robin White, whose companionship brought her great comfort. She loved gardening and took pride in creating beautiful, welcoming spaces in her yard. She and Bill traveled the country in her Ruby Red Mustang with the top down, collecting bricks from towns and landmarks across America. Barbara worked for twenty-five years at Johnson County Bank and later, with Bill, sold real estate, sharing her knowledge of the Kansas City area with their clients.

A classic in every sense, Barbara kept her nails done, her hair styled, her earrings on, and her Chiefs necklace proudly in place. She thrived as a hostess, welcoming nieces, nephews, and extended family into her home for gatherings centered on homemade pizza and glasses of wine. An expert conversationalist, avid listener, and wise advisor, she filled her home with laughter, jazz, and stories. Her grounded rural common sense balanced by modern, forward-thinking independence made her a treasure to all who knew her, young and old.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Maynard and Marvel (Lee) Zeller; her husband, William (Bill) Brownlee; her son, Michael Riniker; sisters Lulu Mae (Lu) Hollowell (Zeller), Corine Snow (Zeller), and Virginia Zeller; brother Vernon Zeller; and brothers-in-law George Snow and Wayne Hollowell. She is survived by brothers John Zeller, Jack Zeller and his wife Nancy, sister-in-law Romona Zeller, and a large number of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
