Barbara Jean Thompson
January 24, 1947— March 6, 2026
Weymouth, MA
Barbara Jean Thompson, of Weymouth, died peacefully on Friday, March 6, 2026, at Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham. She was 79.
Born in Quincy on January 24, 1947, Barbara was the daughter of the late Casper Joseph and Edith Alberta (Jones) Budrick. Raised in West Quincy and later Quincy Center, she graduated from Quincy High School with the Class of 1964. She met her husband Loren while bowling at the Wonder Bowl in Quincy, and the couple married on May 18, 1974, at the First Congregational Church in Braintree. Years later they renewed their vows at St. John the Baptist Church in Quincy.
Barbara earned an associate’s degree from Northeastern University and spent her career as a microbiology laboratory technician at Quincy City Hospital, working with quiet dedication until her retirement in 2017 at the age of 70. Soft-spoken and gentle by nature, she had a warm and sincere presence that put others at ease. She found deep joy in travel, visiting nearly every state and sharing a memorable cross-country driving trip with her young family. Camping trips, reading romance novels, and participating in the Southeastern Massachusetts Mineral Club were among her favorite pastimes.
Above all, family remained the heart of Barbara’s life. She proudly served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for her daughter, acted as a den mother for her son’s Cub Scout troop, and volunteered at her grandchildren’s schools. She is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, Loren A. Thompson; her children, Jeffrey Thompson and his wife Jill-Marie of Weymouth, and Jeanine Waterman and her husband Michael of Hanover; her grandchildren, Jordan Duggan of Weymouth, Keira Thompson of Weymouth, and Allison, Mia, and Ryan Waterman of Hanover; her siblings, Nancy MacLeod of Abington, Mary O’Brien of Quincy, Joseph Budrick and his wife Kathie of Rockland, and Frances Hard of Weymouth; and many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
