February 7, 1927— March 17, 2026
Dayton, OH
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Audrey Kathleen Culbertson, age 99, on Tuesday, March 17th, 2026 at Spring Hills Assisted Living in Dayton, Ohio.
Audrey was born on February 7, 1927 in Dayton, Ohio to Luther and Mae Moore. She had a carefree childhood, enjoying visits with dozens of aunts and uncles, shopping in downtown Dayton, and spending nearly every Saturday at the movies. Despite World War II clouding Audrey’s time at Stivers High School, she excelled in classes and was voted Prom Queen and Most Popular. Subsequently, Audrey earned an Associates Degree from Miami Jacobs Business College.
In 1946, a friend arranged a blind date for Audrey and a man she would remember from high school, Alvin “Buck” Culbertson. The two married in 1947 and had three, spirited daughters, Barbara, Sharon, and Laura. While in Dayton, she became a Sunday School teacher at Omer Park Methodist Church, helped run the family’s Dairy Queen on Smithville Road, and maintained a large social circle of loving friends and family.
In 1973, Audrey, Buck, and Laura moved to Cambridge, Ohio when Buck’s job at NCR relocated their engineering department there. In Cambridge, Audrey found a welcoming group of friends in their new neighborhood and began volunteering in the Guernsey County Hospital gift shop. During the next few decades she put in over 4,000 hours volunteering there.
Audrey and Buck loved to travel, predominantly in the U.S., but also explored Europe and The British Isles. After Buck’s death in 1993, she continued to live on her own in their cozy Cambridge house where she often invited her extensive family to spend cherished weekends with her. She would bake for every guest, welcoming them with her famous peanut butter and chocolate fudge, Jay Alvin Cookies, or Texas Sheet Cake. She lived independently until 2024, when she returned to Dayton and entered an assisted living facility to be closer to her family.
Audrey was generous, resilient, and nurturing. An avid reader, she enjoyed mystery novels most in addition to solving crossword puzzles and playing bridge or pinochle with her friends. She adored animals, spending many years as a pet owner, taking in strays, and feeding the wild creatures who visited her back porch. Most of all, Audrey spent 99 years focusing on fun, family, and love. In her own words, recently discovered in an old journal, the tenets of her life were, “Live and let live; Treat others as you would want to be treated; Be kind to animals.” Her family certainly agrees that’s just what she did.
Audrey was preceded in death by her dear husband of 46 years, Alvin, brothers Stanley and Harold Moore, and her daughter, Barbara Lebo.
She is survived by her daughters Sharon Culbertson of Dayton, Ohio and Laura Mastores of Richmond, Indiana plus Sons-in-law Michael Lebo and Scott Mastores; four grandchildren, Beth, Jameson, Katie, and Marisa and her husband Chris; seven great-grandchildren, Alaysia, Ariana, Cole, Ethan, Ian, Shelby, and Tyler; many nephews and nieces including Charlie, Donna, Jay, Jeff, Mike, Rusty, and Tommy. Considering Audrey lived such a long life, she cared for many others who are not named here but for whom she dearly loved.
If you’d like to honor your love for Audrey through a donation, her family recommends supporting Guernsey Country Senior Citizens Center, Hospice of Guernsey County, The Humane Society of Greater Dayton or other organizations that help elders and animals in your community.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 21st, 2026 at Woodland Cemetery Chapel at 118 Woodland Avenue, Dayton, OH 45409. Services will begin at 10:30 AM. Condolences and remembrances may be sent to the family in the online guest book below.
