Athena Economy Burton

June 1, 1932 March 10, 2026

Raleigh, NC

Athena Economy Burton, 93, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2026. Born on June 1, 1932, she lived a life of remarkable depth, purpose, and warmth. Though she spent her final years in Raleigh, North Carolina, her heart always belonged to Roanoke, Virginia, where she built her life, her career, and her family over many decades.

A woman of great intellect and conviction, Athena earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Mary Washington College after attending Roanoke College. She dedicated much of her professional life to education, serving as a professor in the science department at Roanoke College and teaching at Roanoke Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing, and the College of Health Sciences in Roanoke. Her influence shaped countless students entering the medical field. Beyond the classroom, she answered the call of public service as Chairman of the County Board of Supervisors, Chairman of the Roanoke County School Board, and through her work with the Roanoke County Council of PTA.

Athena’s passions brought joy and adventure to her life. In her younger years she loved riding horses, and she cherished time at the beach, where she delighted in dolphin sightings and the drama of storms rolling in over the ocean. A devoted sports fan, she looked forward each year to March Madness and the thrill of college basketball. She held a deep love for animals, especially her dogs, who were constant companions, along with cats and the occasional wild creature that crossed her path. She treasured time with her family above all, particularly her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and found great pleasure in cards, whether poker or bridge, where her competitive spirit and quick wit made her a formidable and entertaining opponent. Those who knew her will always remember her mischievous laugh, her sense of humor, and her gift for stirring up harmless fun.

Athena is survived by her son, Randy Burton (Jackie), and their children: Katie Ward (Dustin) and their daughter Charlotte, and Jonathan Burton; and her daughter, Elizabeth Lineberger (Alan), and her children: Chrissy Philips (Jeremy), Timmy Fama (Christa) and their children Andrew and Jonathan, and stepson Alan Jr. She is also survived by her “adopted” family, the Bosses, and a wide circle of friends and family who loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Dick Burton; her parents, George and Virginia Economy; and her brother, Nick Economy.
