Asa Van Shirley

Asa Van Shirley, a lifelong resident of Calhoun, passed away on March 11, 2026, at Atrium Health Floyd at the age of 79. Born on April 11, 1946, in Calhoun, he was a dedicated family man and community member whose integrity and commitment left a lasting impression on those around him.

A graduate of Calhoun High School, Class of 1964, Asa proudly served in the United Naval Reserve. He devoted more than 31 years as store manager at Calhoun Office Supply and 15 years at T.J. Office Supply, where his professionalism and strong work ethic earned the respect of colleagues and customers alike. Deeply involved in his community, he was a member of the Calhoun American Legion Post #47, V.F.W. Post #5376, the Calhoun Elks #1883, and the Calhoun Moose Lodge #1974. He was also a longtime member of Belmont Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Columbus Andrew Shirley and Clara Walker Shirley, his wife, Agatha Bell Shirley, and his sisters, Glenda Barnard and Nan Perry.

Asa is survived by his sons, Barry (Brittny) Shirley and Paul (Wanda) Shirley; his daughters, Janie (Clay) Osborn, Kathy Heckman, April (David McKenney) Shirley, and Jennifer (Steve) Thomason; fourteen grandchildren; and thirty-seven great-grandchildren. His enduring spirit, kindness, and devotion to family and community will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
