She attended Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, where she earned a BA in English Language and Literature.A lifelong lover of the arts – music, literature, and fine arts – Ann was an avid reader, and by her own admission, a bit of a literary snob. She loved all genres of music from classical and opera to jazz, blues, and rock and roll. She was a devoted supporter of public media, counting PBS and NPR among her favorite charities, as well as the Humane Society for animals. For many years she volunteered at the public library and various elementary schools around town by donating books and reading to children.Ann attended St. Peters Episcopal Church and Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte. She was a member of: The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America, the Junior League of Charlotte, the Charlotte Debutante Club, Winghaven, Alanon, and AA.She was a generous mother and grandmother and created a welcoming and lively home for her four children and their friends. She had a natural green thumb and was an accomplished gardener. Her beloved house keeper Janet Culp would say, "Mrs. Lockhart you is the rootin'est thing!"She was a masterful cook, a lover of fine food, and enjoyed travel and experiencing the culture of lands near and far. Her home was ever evolving, as she delighted in decorating as if the job was never done.Ann carried a deep love of animals and her home was a sanctuary to cats, dogs, turtles, snakes, gerbils, rats, mice, ducks, rabbits, and even the occasional fish or two. At one point she had 2 dogs, 3 cats, a parrot, a cockatiel, a parakeet, and a mouse.Ann is survived by her four children and their spouses, Thomas Ashe Lockhart Jr and his wife Stephanie, James Wilkinson Lockhart and his wife Julie, John Laurens Lockhart and his wife Amy, and Ann Lockhart Gillman-Mayeux and her husband Craig. She was a devoted Nana to her granddaughters, Charlotte Olivia Laurens Gillman and Grace Maffitt Lockhart, and to her step grandsons, William Mason Mayeux and Robert Clay Mayeux – all of whom she adored. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Dilworth Center for Chemical Dependency, WFAE public radio, WTVI public television, the Humane Society of Charlotte, or a charity of your choice.A service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church on Providence Rd in Charlotte, NC on Monday March 23rd at 2pm, officiated by the Rev.
