Alvis “Jr” Vance, 81, of Garrett Fork in Chapmanville, West Virginia, passed away on March 11, 2026, at Logan Regional Medical Center. Born on April 17, 1944, in Slagle, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Alvis and Elizabeth Vance.
Jr cherished time spent with his family and friends, especially those at the Chief Logan Rec Center. Known affectionately as the “acting Mayor of Garrett Fork,” he took great pride in his John Deere tractors, his meticulously kept lawn and landscaping, and his regular trips to Amish Country.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his sisters Hersie Vance, Sarah (Herman) Enochs, and Margaret (Ralph) Chamber; his brothers Richard, Lewis, William, and Don (Delores) Vance; and his brothers-in-law Stanton Dalton and Danny Workman.
Jr is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Newman Vance; his son, David A. Vance; his sisters, Thelma Dalton and Emma Workman; his grandchildren, Kathryn and Patrick; his sisters-in-law, Donna Vance and Joan Hatton; his brothers-in-law, John (Marsha) Newman and Danny (Nancy) Newman; and his special friends, Owen and Cindy Bailey and their family, as well as Jamie and Kara Hainer and their son.
