Alvin M. Byrd

October 15, 1960 March 5, 2026

Columbia, SC

Alvin McKinley Byrd was born on October 15, 1960, in Statesboro, Georgia, the son of Leo McKinley and Annie-Mae Byrd. He passed away peacefully on March 5, 2026, at his home in Columbia, South Carolina, with his beloved wife by his side.

After receiving his early education in Georgia and attending Snyder High School, Alvin continued his studies at Florida A&M University and Jersey State. He proudly served three years in the United States Navy, an experience that instilled in him a strong work ethic and lifelong dedication. In 1990, he moved to Columbia, where he built a life centered on family, faith, and hard work. On February 14, 1992, he married the love of his life, Latrelle, gaining a mother-in-law, Elouise Reaves. Their marriage was marked by deep love, commitment, and many cherished memories.

Alvin possessed a remarkable talent for carpentry and turned that passion into a successful business, ByrdMans Carpentry, LLC. Known for his skill in remodeling homes and restoring spaces, he earned a reputation for reliability, determination, and pride in his craftsmanship. He had a vibrant personality and joyful spirit that made him the life of any gathering. His contagious laughter and warm smile could light up a room, and he found great pleasure in working on his beloved white Mustang and listening to house music.

Above all, Alvin’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his wife, Latrelle Byrd; children, Rayshawn Scurry, Davon Reaves, Avia Reaves, and Ashley Reaves; daughter-in-law, Monica Reaves; and grandchildren, Justice, Davon Jr., Kemari, Dayshawn, Trayvon, Rochon III, Tyreke, Skylar, Kendall, Richard, and Ashton. He is also survived by his loving siblings, James (Elaine) Byrd, Larry Byrd, Deborah Byrd-McQuilla, Nadine (Isaiah) Jones, Paul Byrd, Victor Byrd, Paula Byrd, and Suzette Byrd, along with five sisters-in-law in Columbia and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and loved ones. He will be remembered for his dedication to family, his joyful presence, and the love he shared so generously.
