Alfred C. May, Jr.

Alfred C. May, Jr.

January 20, 1945 March 9, 2026

Winchendon, MA

Alfred “Chuck” May, affectionately known as Chuckie, passed away at his home on March 9, 2026. Born on January 20, 1945, in Winchendon, Massachusetts, he spent his entire life in the town he loved. A loyal son, steadfast friend, and devoted caretaker, Chuck quietly supported his family and cherished his camp, where many of his happiest memories were made.

Chuck grew up working in the family sawmill alongside his father and uncle. In his late teens he helped at his uncle’s Texaco station before moving to a building supply store, where his strong work ethic earned him a trip to Puerto Rico. He spent the rest of his career at the American Legion in Winchendon, retiring in 2004 as a maintenance technician. He was an active member of the Ridge Runners snowmobile club in his younger years, enjoying trips to New Hampshire and Maine as well as visits to the Winchendon Rod and Gun Club. Chuck had a lifelong passion for repurposing metal, wood, and other materials, a reflection of his thrifty nature and resourceful upbringing.

Above all, family was the center of Chuck’s world. He treasured Saturdays spent taking his daughters Kim and Amy, niece Wendy, and nephew Brian on snowmobiles and sleds to his beloved camp. He delighted in telling stories of his childhood and camp life, remembering vivid details that brought the past to life for his listeners. A humble man, he found quiet satisfaction in helping others at camp without seeking recognition. He loved cooking boiled dinners or grilling steaks on Sundays, caring for his daughters on weekends, and later sharing projects and stories with his grandsons. Chuck was a dedicated caregiver for his parents in their final years, spending every evening with his mother at the nursing home. He also enjoyed puttering around his home, raking leaves and pine needles at camp and on the Cape, grooming the beach, and sharing quiet conversations with friends under the beach pine tree while passing out dum-dum lollipops to the children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred C. May Sr. and Lucille V. (Burgess) May, his brother John May, and his granddaughter Alexandria E. Bradley. Chuck is survived by his daughters, Kim Bradley of Springfield, Tennessee, and Amy Bogue of South Chatham, Massachusetts; his grandsons, Forrest (Bethany) Bogue of San Diego, California, Brian Bogue (partner Katherine Valenzuela) of Warwick, Rhode Island, and their son Benjamin, and Cameron Bradley of Springfield, Tennessee; his sister Jean LaValley of West Palm Beach, Florida; sister-in-law Jeanne May of Gardner, Massachusetts; many nieces, nephews, and extended family; and his grand-dog Buddy.
