Alfonso S. Zapata of Harlingen, TX, beloved husband, father and grandfather, entered eternal rest on March 4, 2026 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. He passed surrounded by family members, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. Alfonso was born in Edcouch, TX on September 28, 1940. He proudly served his county in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era and was honorably discharged. He was recognized by everyone that knew him for his work ethic, charisma, integrity and easy-going attitude towards life. He enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys and binging the classic westerns that he grew up watching as a young man. An avid runner, Alfonso routinely woke up at 3 a.m. to run three to four miles even though he was well into his eighties. Alfonso is survived by Isabel Zapata, his devoted wife of 52 years, Steve and Tina May Angulo (son-in-law, daughter), Andrew and Seth Angulo (grandsons), Juan Alfonso and Velma Zapata, (son, daughter-in-law), Kassandra and Jon Jakob Zapata (granddaughter, grandson), and Rudi Zapata (son). He was blessed to live long enough to see his beloved great-granddaughter, Averie Zapata, be born. Alfonso is further survived by one brother, three sisters and a large circle of nieces, nephews and extended family who will miss him dearly.Graveside Service will be held March 19, 2026, with Fr. Horacio Chavaria presiding over the Committal service scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission, followed with full military honors under the auspices of the American Legion Post 205 of Harlingen, TX.
