Alan P. Skwarla

1956 — 2026

Scott Twp., PA

Alan P. Skwarla, age 69, of Scott Township, passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2026. He was the son of the late Alex and Ann (Hopchak) Skwarla, the dear brother of Joan (Harry) Hilewitz, and the uncle of the late Alexis Ann Hilewitz. He is also survived by several cousins and his beloved dog Millie, who was the light of his life.

Alan graduated from Chartiers Valley High School and earned his degree from Duquesne University School of Education. He began his career as a music teacher and band director in public schools throughout the Pittsburgh area, where he inspired generations of students with his deep love of music. Later, he returned to Duquesne University, this time to the Thomas R. Kline School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor. Admitted to the bar in both Pennsylvania and Arizona, Alan served as a Supreme Court advocate while maintaining a private practice and working with the Allegheny County Public Defender’s Office. He brought compassion and dedication to his legal work, always striving to help those in need. He was also deeply committed to the Big Brothers program, where he mentored one very special “Little Brother” for many years.

A lifelong musician, Alan founded the Algo Latino Latin Big Band early in his career, serving as its conductor and trumpet player and producing a CD with the group. Even after his retirement three years ago, he remained an active and passionate member of the music community, performing as director and trumpet player with the Four Seasons Brass and serving as band director for the Swinging Bobcats Big Band.

Alan will be remembered for his dedication to education, his service to others, his profound love of music, and the care he showed his family and those closest to him.
