Alan A. Winchell

1949 — 2026

Avoca, NY

Alan A. “Al” Winchell, 76, of State Route 415 in Avoca, passed away on the morning of March 12, 2026, at his home after a long illness. Born in Cuba, New York, on May 12, 1949, he was the son of Kenneth and Dorothy (Gunsolus) Winchell. Al grew up in Newark, New York, where he attended high school, later earning his GED in Bath. He lived in Bath for several years before making Avoca his home for the past four decades.

In his working life, Al began as a machinist for Mobil Chemical Corporation in Macedon, then worked for Morrison-Knudsen in Hornell and spent many years as a field agent for Deery’s Construction in Prattsburg. A former member of the Hammondsport Moose Lodge, he found his greatest pleasures outdoors—camping, fishing, and hunting. His early experiences helping his father with a racecar sparked a lifelong passion for motorsports. He became a devoted follower of local dirt tracks in Dundee, Woodhull, and Canandaigua, as well as a dedicated fan of Dale Earnhardt and NASCAR, attending races whenever he could.

Known among family and friends as a true jack-of-all-trades, Al could repair nearly anything and took pride in crafting furniture, including chairs and tables, as well as children’s toys. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Bambi (Koerner) Winchell, whom he married on February 14, 1981; his children, Alan M. (Heidi) Winchell of Sanford, North Carolina, Brandon (Theresa) Winchell of Avoca, Ron (Meghan) Banach of Pine City, New York, Tanya (James) Fletcher of Avoca, and Nunziato (Nadene) Nirelli of Bath; his sister, Cynthia Wolfe of Florida; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Philip, Douglas, and Mark Winchell.
