Columbus, OH

Agnes Whittington Poteet passed away on March 10, 2026. Born on January 19, 1936, during a blizzard on a farm outside Canal Winchester, she was the daughter of Howard “Whit” and Georgia Whittington. Agnes earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The Ohio State University and devoted many years to teaching math and social studies at Woodward Park Middle School. She married Bill Poteet on December 22, 1957, and the couple shared 67 years of marriage until his death on January 24, 2025.

Family was the center of Agnes’s life and brought her the greatest joy. She is survived by her daughters Leanne (Janice), Cherry (Nancie), and Tanya (Mark), her son Scott (Pamula), and her grandchildren Graham (Becky), Julian, Chloe, Jessi (David), Jacob (Chelsea), Kayden (Selahja), Caroline, Taylor, Frederick, Franklin, and Marshall. She also cherished her great-grandchildren Raeshawn and Piper. Agnes was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Meredith and Marjorie, and her brother Raymond.

A lifelong gardener, Agnes became a Master Gardener in retirement and volunteered for many years with the Master Gardeners’ vegetable garden at The Ohio State University, where she helped plan, plant, tend the garden, and organize the annual spring plant sale and auction. She especially loved sharing her passion with her grandchildren. Neighbors fondly remember the climbing roses along her fence, her spring peonies, and her heirloom tomatoes.
